THE SNOWMOBILE JERKED to a stop in front of a log cabin on whose front door was painted Suds And Showers in bright yellow. Cyd cut the motor and started to get off, then cast a look over her shoulder at Jeffrey.

“You can let go,” she said, her voice muffled behind the frost-caked ski mask.

“I’m trying,” Jeffrey muffled back, wondering if his lips had merged with his wool mask. Plus, his arms had been encircled around her waist for so long, his sleeves were frozen stiff.

With great effort, he released his grip and got off the machine. Then he crunched across the powdered snow, almost getting teary-eyed at the scent of coffee and cooking meat wafting from the cabin.

Me, the guy who loves tofu, is getting emotional over meat.

He trudged up the snow-laden steps to the porch, not wanting to further contemplate that last thought. It took enough concentration and effort to put one foot in front of the other in this world turned walk-in freezer.

He shoved open the heavy wooden door and stepped into a small living room crowded with chairs, several coatracks, stacks of books and games. He tugged off his ski mask and breathed deeply, staring across the room at a blazing fire, near which lay two bear-sized dogs. One raised its massive black head, sniffed, then lay back down.

Don’t blame you, buddy. I wouldn’t be interested in a walking icicle, either.

Heavy footsteps followed Jeffrey inside. He turned and watched Cyd stomping her feet on the welcome mat. After tossing aside a plastic sack filled with the clean clothes Geri had packed for them, Cyd pulled off her mittens. Then she tugged off her ski mask, unveiling her flushed cheeks, sparkling eyes, and untamed hair.

An odd shiver that had nothing to do with the cold raced over his skin. Damn, she looked beautiful.

Noting how the room’s hazy glow caressed the curve of her cheekbone and warmed her eyes to a velvety brown, something in his chest constricted. An indefinable ache that took him by surprise. And he had the sudden, crazy idea that this woman held the answer to something he’d been seeking for a long time.

He tore his gaze off her and began unlacing a boot. Crazy idea, all right. Cyd and her moods had provided more questions than answers. No, he took that back. He had one answer. He finally understood that she’d been uptight about the TV series because she blamed it for Jordan’s absence. But other things still didn’t make sense. Like why a woman who didn’t mince words would resort to such bizarre nonverbal techniques as sooting up his face.

Not that he could always figure women out, but Cyd was definitely in a league all her own.

“Judy? Jerry?” Cyd called out, working off one of her boots. When there was no answer, she lowered her voice, “If they were here, their dogs would be, too. They’re probably picking up supplies.”

He looked questioningly at the dogs by the fire.

“Not those dogs,” Cyd explained. “The sled dogs.
